Underscore collects no personal data. It never asks you to create an account, it has no analytics, and nothing you write or underline ever leaves your device.
What we do not collect
We do not collect, store or transmit any of the following:
- Your name, email address, phone number or any account details
- Your location
- Your contacts, photos or any other content on your device
- Advertising identifiers or tracking cookies
- Which lines you read, underline or share
What stays on your device
The app keeps the following in your device’s own storage, and nowhere else:
- The lines you have underlined (your Notebook)
- The personal order in which lines are shown to you
- Your reading streak
- Your language and card-design preferences
This data is never sent to us or to any third party. If you delete the app, it is deleted with it.
The Feed
The Feed tab shows literature and publishing news. To load it, the app requests a prepared list of headlines from a server we run. That request carries no account, no identifier and no reading history — it is a plain download, like opening a public web page, and we do not use it to build any profile of you.
Story images are loaded from the publishers’ own websites, so those sites see a standard image request from your device. Tapping a story opens it on the publisher’s site in Safari, where that publisher’s privacy policy applies.
Share cards
The images you create are rendered on your device. When you share a card, the image goes only to the app you choose (Instagram, WhatsApp, Messages and so on); we never receive a copy. Saving a card to Photos uses an add-only permission — Underscore cannot read your photo library.
Purchases
Underscore Plus purchases are handled by Apple. We never see, store or process your payment details. Billing, free trials and cancellations are governed by Apple’s own systems and privacy policy.
Children’s privacy
Because Underscore collects no data from any user, it collects no data from children either.
External links
The “Source” link in the app opens Wikipedia, and Feed stories open the publisher’s own site. Once you leave the app, the destination site’s privacy policy applies.
